Create a cover song release
A cover song is a version of an existing song performed by another artist. If you want to release a cover version, there are a few things you need to consider.
A cover version of a song must retain the original composition and arrangement without any changes. If you make any changes to the arrangement, such as removing the vocals from the intro, then it’s no longer a cover but a derivative work.
Do I need a license for a cover song?
Yes. Before releasing a cover song, you need to make sure that the necessary rights and licenses are in place.
This usually includes a mechanical license and correct copyright information. Depending on the song, territory and use case, additional permissions may be required. If you are unsure, we recommend contacting the relevant publisher, rights holder or performing rights organization.
Please note that you are responsible for making sure you have the required permissions before submitting the release.
For cover songs please AVOID any references to the original artist, such as:
- "Made Famous By"
- "Originally Performed By"
- "In the Style of"
- "Tribute to"
- "Cover of"
Please note: Cover releases should not use misleading artist names, product titles or versions that could confuse users.
How should I enter the metadata?
Title
Use the original song title without any changes. Do not add phrases such as “Cover”, “Tribute” or “Originally Performed By”.
Artist
Enter the name of the artist, band or group performing your cover version. Do not enter the original performing artist unless they are actually involved in your recording.
Composer
Enter the real names of the original songwriters/composers. Do not use stage names unless they are the officially credited songwriter names.
All other metadata should be entered according to the actual cover recording.
Cover Versions shouldn't be delivered to shops that include Meta or YouTube Content ID.
You can exclude these stores in rokket! under Step 6.
