Create a cover song release

A cover song is a version of an existing song performed by another artist. If you want to release a cover version, there are a few things you need to consider.

A cover version of a song must retain the original composition and arrangement without any changes. If you make any changes to the arrangement, such as removing the vocals from the intro, then it’s no longer a cover but a derivative work. To legally release a derivative work, you must obtain permission directly from the publisher, over and above the mechanical license offered by services such as Easy Song Licensing.

It’s important to obtain a license from the original songwriter. This process includes properly crediting the copyright information and following any specific guidelines to avoid legal issues. To do this correctly, it is a good idea to contact performing rights organizations for assistance.

For cover songs please avoid any references to the original artist, such as:

  • "Made Famous By"
  • "Originally Performed By"
  • "In the Style of"
  • "Tribute to"
  • "Cover of"

Please note: Cover releases should not use misleading artist names, product titles or versions that could confuse users.

How should the title, artist, and composer fields be filled for a cover song release?

  • Title: It must be exactly the same as the original title.
  • Artist: Name of the person or group that created or performed the cover.
  • Composer: The names of the original songwriters or artists of the song.
  • All other information should remain unchanged.

Cover Versions shouldn't be delivered to shops that include Meta or YouTube Content ID.

You can exclude these stores in rokket! under Step 6.
