Waterfall Release (Spotify)

A waterfall release on Spotify means releasing your tracks one by one, instead of all at once as an album.

By using the Waterfall method, you can easily pitch each of your tracks on Spotify for Artists, giving you a valuable advantage.

Each single is treated as a separate release, with its own unique UPC and Spotify URI.Instead of releasing a Single, EP, or Album with tracks coming out at different times, you'll release individual packages throughout the campaign.

This means that as more music is released, the ‘latest release’ on the artist’s page can be replaced with multiple individual packages.

The best way to create a waterfall release on Spotify is as follows:

    1. Release the first single (let’s call it Release A)
    2. Create single B, which contains the new track and the previous tracks from single A, and release it with a new UPC.
    3. Make sure the track information (metadata) is exactly the same. Use the track from the back catalogue to do this.
    4. Once the track linking is done between Release A (Single 1) and Release B (which contains Single 1), Release A must be taken offline.
    5. Repeat this process until all tracks have been released.

We recommend that you wait at least 14 days between releases to ensure that everything runs smoothly and to get the most out of the waterfall release method.

It’s important to wait for up to 72 hours for the linking process to complete before taking the previous single offline.

On Spotify, if more than 50% of the tracks have already been released, the release is labeled as a compilation instead of an album. Keep this in mind for your Waterfall release.
